Legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of Al-Nassr, saved himself from the woes of a decisive night, scoring a goal in his team’s 2-0 victory over Al-Khaleej in Round 33 of the Roshen League.
The “Don” had missed a penalty kick in the 65th minute, hitting the right post of Al-Khaleej’s goalkeeper, surprising both the fans and the player himself.
However, before the end of the match, Ronaldo was awarded a penalty kick after being brought down by the goalkeeper. He decided to take it for the second time, but this time he scored it in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
With this goal, Ronaldo saved himself from the fan wrath of angry fans, following the team’s disappointing season. Some of them called for the removal of “Don” and several other names.
After the goal, Ronaldo turned to the Al-Nassr fans and apologized for missing the first penalty, finding support in the form of applause and continuous chanting of his name.
The reason behind Al-Nassr fans’ anger at Ronaldo specifically is his continued failure on decisive nights this season. This is the second penalty miss he has made with Al-Alamy during his career.
Ronaldo missed for the first time during the 1-0 loss to Al-Taawoun in the round of 16 of the current King’s Cup.
Also, Ronaldo missed a clear opportunity in the final minutes of the match against Kawasaki in the Asian Elite Cup semi-finals, a night in which his team lost 3-2.
With this goal, Ronaldo moved clear at the top of the Roshen League’s top scorers list with 24 goals, ahead of the French trio Karim Benzema (Al-Ittihad), Ivan Toney (Al-Ahli), and Abderrazak Hamdallah (Al-Shabab) by three goals.
The matches against Al-Khaleej and Al-Fateh in the final two rounds of the league are considered decisive nights for Al-Nassr, as they need to win the second match as well to secure their place in the next edition of the Saudi Super Cup, amidst a fierce pursuit by Al-Ahli Jeddah.
